Weight Loss Boarding School Reports Unprecedented Success
Academy of the Sierras opened in California in the Fall of 2004 with one great hope: to change the course of overweight teens' lives so that they would not fall into the typical pattern of weight gain, weight loss, more weight gain, and the resulting physical and emotional frustrations that accompany what often seemed like a life sentence.
Two years later the success of AOS is evident - teens not only lost weight, but they followed up with these children when they returned home and recorded exceptional results: these teens CONTINUED to lose weight when they return to their home environments. The program has been so successful that AOS is opening an East Coast campus in North Carolina in the Fall of 2006.
The school focuses on effecting critical behavioral changes to give their students, many of whom have been overweight since early childhood, real hope of escaping a lifetime of health problems due to obesity. The main components of the program are:
- Healthy yet delicious diet based on science not fads
- Culinary and nutrition training
- Activity and fun ways to get exercise
- Significant behavioral intervention - behavior modification
- Focus on long-term weight control by involving the family
- Self-monitoring of daily food intake and exercise
- Academics to keep teens on track with their education
The AOS website features many past students who have successfully embraced the program, and the weight losses are impressive and highly statistically significant.
The types of teens who benefit from this program are those who have struggled with significant weight (30 pounds or more) for at least 2 years and who are motivated to lose weight and change their behavior. Some of their students have been morbidly obese, with one reported to have lost 191 pounds! The average weight loss is 3 pounds per week and teens who attend the school for at least one semester show the best long-term results. |
